Maryland is making great strides to build a new marketplace for individuals, families and small businesses to learn about their insurance options, compare different plans and enroll for health coverage. In August 2012, the Maryland Health Benefit Exchange (MHBE) announced the name for the new marketplace, Maryland Health Connection.
Beginning in October 2013, Maryland residents will visit Maryland Health Connection to determine if they qualify for federal tax subsidies or cost-sharing reductions to help pay for health insurance or if they, or a member of their family, is eligible for Medicaid or another program such as the Children’s Health Insurance Program. Small businesses will utilize Maryland Health Connection to find plans that best meet the needs of employees and qualify for tax credits. Until October 2013, Maryland Health Connection is serving as a resource with useful links to other programs, both public and private, that can provide information and help today.
Maryland Health Connection is building a strong infrastructure to support the marketplace by working with health insurance carriers, insurance producers, assisters and advocates. Maryland Health Connection will be supported by a statewide consolidated call center. In-person assistance will be available statewide by individuals known as “navigators.”
